MiCA transition ends: EU crypto firms face full authorisation requirements
The bloc’s grandfathering period has now closed, making licenses and orderly customer migration central priorities.
The deadline
The EU-wide MiCA transitional period expired on 1 July 2026. Firms not authorised to provide crypto-asset services to EU clients must stop services where they lack a lawful basis to operate.
Protecting existing customers
ESMA called for credible wind-down plans and orderly transfers of customer assets to authorised providers or self-hosted wallets where appropriate.
Consumer takeaway
Before trusting a platform’s licensing claims, consumers can consult ESMA’s MiCA registers and the relevant national supervisor.
