ECB invites new innovators to test digital euro use cases
A fresh call for expressions of interest signals continued experimentation in public digital money.
An innovation track
The ECB published a new call for expressions of interest for digital euro innovation platform activities on 28 September 2026, following a separate September invitation to online and mobile merchants to participate in a digital euro pilot.
What is being tested
The work examines potential uses and technical approaches for digital public money. It should not be confused with an announcement that a retail digital euro has launched.
Why it matters
European payment providers, merchants and developers are watching how public infrastructure could coexist with existing payment instruments.
